Starting with ‘Cupid and Psyche’, we will see how Apuleuis’ tale became transformed by the salon culture of the 18th and 19th centuries, into the canonical version of the fairytale we know today. We will then look at two twentieth century takes - some stills from Cocteau’s ‘La Belle et la bete’ - and extracts from the short stories of Angela Carter and Leonora Carrington - to explore some of the shifts of meanings which this tale has undergone. These different versions of the tale will be used to generate your own version of this ancient story.
